Brief History
Rail carriage A 531 was built at the Petone Railway Workshops in 1896 as a 2nd class, 44 foot, 2-compartment, clerestory car with longitudinal seating and was gas-lit. It was allocated to the Wanganui section. The car was converted in 1904 to a "Turtleback" car (having its clerestory removed). This car would have spent most of its life in provincial service in and around Wanganui. At some stage, this car was converted to an on-service "Ea" car for use by the Way & Works or Signals Branch.
