Brief History
25 of these types of brake van were built in railways workshops between 1906 and 1929. This van is an example of one of five that were built in the Newmarket Railway Workshops in 1922. They were used on the end of long haul trains for both freight and the on express passenger services as the guard's van. This Van F121 was regularly attached to the Opua Express where it was used to convey parcels and passenger luggage, and provide accommodation for the Guard. At MOTAT it was used as storage unit during the building of the tramline for the Western Springs Tramway. Today only the underframe remains.
