Brief History
L 3496 was built by the New Zealand Railways in 1890. It is 1 of 1153 L-1 series built with either 4 or 5 boards, as a wooden highside wagon with a combination of steel sole bars and coil or leaf springs. L 3496 is fitted with coil springs. The L series were numerous class of general purpose, goods wagon used for conveyance of wood, coal, fertiliser, and implements. Underframes of this size were also often used to convery single men's huts from one workplace to another along the railway and parked in a rail yard. L 3496 is currently loaded with a single working man's hut.
