Description
"M" (low-side) wagon, circa 1880 with a circa 1940-1950 workman's hut.
Brief History
This 15 foot, 4-wheeled, wooden wagon was built by the New Zealand Railways in the early 1880s as an 'M' low-sided wagon. It was converted to an E wagon with the number E 2258 in approximately 1958. It had been built with 1879 Railway Axle Box Company patent axle boxes, elliptical springs, wooden head stocks, wooden transoms and steel sole bars. It was originally used to carry workmen huts around the railway system. Only the underframe came into the MOTAT Collection.
