Description
Serving Dish [New Zealand Railways]. Rectangular ceramic dish with rounded corners. Has bevelled base and straight sides flaring out towards rim. White interior and maroon exterior and base with line of NZR logos inside the rim in burgundy. Maker's stamp on base "CROWN LYNN / NEW ZEALAND / VITRIFIED"
Brief History
Railway station refreshment rooms were initially leased out by New Zealand Railways to private operators until NZR began to take over these leases from 1917 as an extra source of income. Ceramic ware was originally provided to the refreshment rooms from suppliers in the United Kingdom, until WWII made the importing of ceramics difficult. The Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Company (later Crown Lynn) supplied the first teacup to NZR in 1940.

This serving dish was manufactured by Crown Lynn (later Ceramco) in the 1970s or 1980s. Crown Lynn served the post-war market with millions of pieces of domestic crockery until it closed in 1989. Its closure was, in part, due to market deregulation and the end of protectionism, which made imported pieces available to consumers at a cheaper price.
