Description
Daguerreotype showing a moustached seated man with back swept hair.
The image does not show his legs only to where his hands are resting in his lap. He is wearing a dark jacket with lighter waistcoat and pants. The jacket has a single button holding it closed. On the right side is a triangular part of a handkerchief showing from the right pocket. He has a white shirt under the suit and a dark bow tie that has been tied like a rectangular box. White cuffs show at the end of the sleeves. His right hand is resting in his lap. His left elbow is resting on a light coloured piece of furniture that has a floral pattern on the surface. The man is looking directly at the viewer.
Encased in a dark green leather case, the covers have an upper and lower band with a floral pattern, hinged with a mended spine, with a narrow metal plate with four arrowhead shaped holes in it that clips into a metal plate on the upper edge. The metal attachments on both front and back cover are a pattern of cut metal that ends with three curved spikes, with a body of three curved spikes within an outer edge of two curves raising up to a domed roof. The inside of the case has a black coloured plush lining. The rectangular image has two rounded corners at the top. It is within a gold coloured metal mat with pointed areas like the top of candles surrounding the image and an other edge of leafy patterns. The rectangular outer metal surround has a joined double circles in each corner with curling patterns extending 1.5 cm along each edge. In the centre of each edge is a raised pattern that extends for a short area over the mat. Between all these patterns are areas of vertical or horizontal lines. Outside of this is a thin strip of brown coloured plush fabric.
