Description
SGT. C.G. Bell, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Medals.
Medal bar carrying 5 WWI and WWII era medals.
From Left to Right:
1. The 1914-15 Star: Ribbon is watered silk with red, white and blue stripes, 1914-15 Star is a crowned four-pointed star with crossed swords and a wreath of oak leaves, with the royal cypher at the foot and a central scroll inscribed 1914-15. Scroll across the centre is inscribed "1914-15". The reverse of the 1914-15 Star is plain, except for the inscribed name and service details of the recipient["12/3222 / SGT. C.G. BELL / N.Z.E.F."]. The medal is bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring.

2. The British War Medal: Ribbon- orange watered centre, with thin stripes of white and black at each side, and borders of royal blue. The obverse of this medal shows the uncrowned left-facing profile of King George V and is marked "GEORGIVS V BRITT. OMN REX ET IND IMP". The reverse of the medal depicts St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones (the emblems of death). While the sun is above the horses head. Marked "1914 1918"

3. The Victory Medal (Only the ribbon present medal has been removed): The ribbon is watered silk with a double rainbow, with indigo at the edges and red in the centre.

4.The War Medal 1939-45: The ribbon is the red, white, and blue of the (British) Union Flag. There is a narrow central red stripe with a narrow white stripe on either side. There are broad red stripes at either edge, the two intervening stripes being blue.On the obverse of this medal is the effigy of King George VI, inscribed "GEORGIVS VI D G BR OWN REX ET INDIAE IMP". On the reverse is a triumphant lion trampling on a dragon "1939 / 1945"

5. The New Zealand War Service Medal: Ribbon is black with white stripe at edges. Medal is silver. On the obverse of this medal is the effigy of King George VI, inscribed "GEORGIVS VI D G BR OWN REX F D IND IMP". On the reverse is a Fern and "FOR / SERVICE TO / NEW ZEALAND / 1939-1945". Fern leaf motif on the suspender.
