Brief History
Ea 3271 started life as a Ug horsebox wagon in 1913. It was one of the twenty five Ug-2 series built between 1906 and 1923. They were all later altered for use as vegetable wagons between 1950-1952. This involved the removal of the internal fittings and securing of compartment doors and windows. They were then reclassified Uga. Of the twenty five Uga-2 series, six were allocated to North Island Main Trunk and branches and nineteen to South Island Main Trunk and branches. Ug 43 was then converted to a flat-bed wagon and redesignated Ea 3271. Only the underframe on its wheel sets came to MOTAT where it remains as a flat top wagon operated on the Western Springs Railway.
