Brief History
Half carriages A 432 and 433 were originally built as identical 2nd class carriages in 1885 at the Newmarket Railway Workshops. They featured a low roof, 4-compartments and had centre-entry. During the Great Depression, these carriages were used to transport Gumdiggers to the Kauri gum fields of Northland and were nicknamed 'Gumdigger Specials' or 'Penny Dreadfuls.' When these carriages were written off in the mid-1930s, they were cut in half and sold to the general public.
