Brief History
Guard's van F 247 was one of a batch of six built in 1901 at East Town Workshops, Wanganui. It was a match-lined, 30 foot, "Turtle Back" guardsvan equipped with gas lighting, 2 dog boxes and a stove. It also had facilities for receiving late mail. F 247 was allocated to Wanganui section and is representative of the guards-brakevans found on the end of every train in New Zealand until the early 1990s. This van has been restored and is operational on the Western Springs Railway.
