Brief History
Car Aa 1480 was built in 1916 as a 50 foot dining-car and was one of five built for the North Island Main Trunk service. It was electrically-lit, possibly from new, and was fitted with steam heating, as well as a toilet and hand-basin at each end. During the First World War, dining cars were removed from service due to a shortage of man power. Aa 1480 was subsequently converted in 1918 to an 18-berth main trunk sleeping car. It suffered a fire at one end and, as a result, the damaged compartments were removed. Around the 1940s, it was converted to an 'On Service' Ea car for maintenance staff use. This conversion retained several of the original bunk compartments in near original condition, but saw the removal of the male toilet and hand-basin which were replaced with a standard platform end. This is the last remaining wooden-bodied, main trunk sleeping car.
