Brief History
A 1819 was built in the Addington Railway Workshops in 1935 as a 50 foot, 1st class 2-compartment day car with a centre toilet and electric lighting. A 1819 was also fitted with steam heating. Five of this type were built and allocated to the South Island's main line - four in Christchurch and one in Dunedin. One car could accommodate 33 first class passengers. This car shows the progression from wood-sheathed to steel-panelled cars. It was considered to be in world class when introduced and, later, many were converted to car-vans such as AL50147. These were the first cars to use concertina-covered gangways as standard fittings for passenger comfort. A 1819 still has it's original concertinas fitted. Many of these cars were converted to second class, retaining the centre toilet and hand basin and then used on provincial expresses and then suburban services. Others were converted for use by Way and Works staff for overnight accomodation.
