Brief History
Rail car Aa 1136 was built in 1909 in the Petone Railway Workshops as a second class wooden-panelled 50 foot, 2-compartment gas-lit car. It had two centre toilets and was fitted with steam heating. It was typical of the cars built for the new express trains on the North Island Main Trunk after it was opened in 1908. Cars classified 'Aa' had substantially wider bodies than earlier cars, so were restricted to use on lines with sufficiently generous clearances to accommodate them. Aa 1136 was originally allocated to the Wellington section and was initially painted in 'Pullman Green' with gold lining. In 1924 it was converted to electric lighting, and painted 'Carnation Red.' In 1943, the 2 toilets in the centre were removed and replaced with a single toilet at one end. After the introduction of main line steel cars during the 1930s, these wooden cars were relegated to secondary services, including provincial expresses, and then to suburban trains. Aa1136 was allocated to the Auckland suburban service. It was written off in early 1975 and acquired by MOTAT, arriving there in May 1975.
