Brief History
Car van A 1816 was built in the Otahuhu Railway Workshops in 1934 as a 50 foot, 2nd class, 2-compartment, Main Trunk car. It was one of eight built of this class. The car was equipped with electric lighting and was amongst the first of a new generation of steel-panelled cars to be constructed at the new Otahuhu Railway Workshops. In 1970, it was converted for use on the Auckland suburban service as a car-van and re-classified AL 50147. A shunting mishap in the Auckland Rail yard resulted in one end being extensively damaged and, in process of repair, the damaged end was rebuilt as a guards compartment and reclassified as a Carvan. It was was then given the Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) number AI50147. It is now in service on the Western Springs Railway.
