Brief History
Bicycle motocross (BMX) started in the 1970s when people began racing and using their bicycles for stunts on off-road, dirt tracks. By the mid-1970s, manufacturers began designing bicycles specifically for the sport and the first world championships were held in 1982. In Aotearoa, BMX clubs and formal racing were established by the early 1980s. This bike is an early 2000s era BMX model by New Zealand brand Avanti. It is an example of their Avanti BMX Development (ABD) brand, which has risen in profile after being sponsored by BMX rider Sarah Walker. The bike was donated to MOTAT by Avanti’s parent company, Sheppard Cycles, in 2014.
