Description
Brown, rectangular printed circuit board (PCB) with a range of electronic components soldered on, silver circuitry on back. 16 pin gold plated edge connector on narrowest edge.
Brief History
Miniaturisation of components and storage devices as well as circuitry has been at the forefront of advances in computer technology since the early electro-mechanical computers.
With the advent of the transistor, invented in 1947, to replace the electronic valve, it became possible to house the equivalent of several valves on a pluggable card or board. The interconnecting circuitry on these cards was achieved using printed circuitry instead of discrete wires. Once plugged into a board of interconnecting wires, these cards made up most of the circuitry of the computers manufactured around this era. Greater speed and better reliability were achieved with this type of technology and typically two 10 digit numbers could be multiplied 100,000 times per second.
