Description
Black plastic helmet. Red reflective tape around the base of the dome of the helmet. Attached to the front of the helmet is a 'NEW ZEALAND / FIRE SERVICE' sticker badge. The interior of the helmet has an attached grey and white plastic head brace and the helmet has attached a black chin strap. Embossed on the underside rim of the helmet reads, 'SAFETY SUPPLY COMPANY / SUPER / CHIEFTAIN / SAFE. T. HELMET / MADE IN CANADA'.
Brief History
This is an example of the Chieftain style helmet used by fire fighters. This style of helmet was made in the North America from polycarbonate. Polycarbonate helmets replaced heavier helmets made of compressed cork. It is plastic that was first manufactured in Germany during 1956 and used for safety gear, among other applications.
