Description
Black plastic helmet with a thin white reflective tape around the base of the dome of the helmet. 'NEW ZEALAND / FIRE SERVICE ' Sticker badge attached to the front of the helmet. Black material chin strap. Black leather and white plastic head brace attached to the interior of the helmet. Embossed on the underside rim of the helmet reads, 'SAFETY SUPPLY COMPANY / SUPER / CHIEFTAIN / SAFE. T. HELMET / MADE IN CANADA'.
Brief History
This is an example of the Chieftain style helmet used by fire fighters. This style of helmet was made in the North America from polycarbonate. Polycarbonate helmets replaced heavier helmets made of compressed cork. It is plastic that was first manufactured in Germany during 1956 and used for safety gear, among other applications.
