Siemens launched the System EDX in the 1970s, and this example was in use from new in Telecom NZ’s Airedale Street Telephone Centre, where it replaced the previous analogue telex switching exchange. This model was the first SPC (stored program control) computer-controlled exchange in New Zealand, using PDP11/44 computer technology. The exchange provided service across New Zealand, and when it was retired telex switching came to an end in New Zealand.
