Hughes magic lantern, black body with elaborate fretwork, 6 legs, acetylene jets, brass extension lens. Originally powered by carbide, later converted to electricity.
Brief History
Before 1900 people made their own entertainment in the home, playing indoor games, musical instruments, and singing and acting. Magic Lantern projectors became very popular with their instant display of fascinating images, almost as if by magic. They were powered by candle, limelight or carbide which shone through 8 x 8 cm glass slides onto a screen.
