Description
Aircraft chair - wicker-work. The chair has no arms. The back rest is quite high and rounded on top. The 4 legs are shorter at the rear than at the front, giving the chair a backward slant. There are cross member cane rods under the chair and between the legs to give the chair rigidity.

One of two wicker seats removed from the Ryan aircraft 'Aotearoa' prior to the flight, which was the first aeroplane to attempt to fly the Tasman on 10th January 1928. Piloted by Captain Hood and Lieutenant Moncrieff.
Brief History
This is one of a pair of wicker seats removed from the Ryan aircraft 'Aotearoa' G-AUNZ, prior to its attempt at flying the across the Tasman Sea on 10 January 1928. Piloted by Captain George Hood and Lieutenant John Moncrieff, 'Aotearoa' departed from Sydney, with the intention to arrive at Trentham, north of Wellington sometime on January 11.

In order to lighten the aircraft, modifications to the interior were made, including the removal of this seat (one of the four original passenger seats fitted to the aircraft). The extra space was taken up by an additional fuel tank. The original seats were intended to be refitted into the aircraft upon its arrival into Wellington, and were shipped over in anticipation of this.
