Description
Hand coloured photographic print mounted on board. Subject of print is the surrender of Japanese Field Commanders on Bougainville on 8th September 1945. This surrender occurred after the main Japanese surrender ceremony on board USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. Surrender ceremony occured between Lieutenant General Kanda, commander of the XVIII Japanese Army (seated left), surrendered to Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige (GOC, II Australian Corps (seated back left). Accompanying at table are Brigadier S F Legge, DA& QMG II Aust. Corps (seated back right) and Vice Admiral Tomoshiga Samejima, Commander 8th Japanese Naval Forces Fleet (seated right). Various Australian, New Zealand and American and Japanese officers are pictured in photograph. With flags of United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand Air Force on back wall, swords surrendered by Japanese officers on table. This photograph was taken by Clyde 'Snow' Stewart, who at the time was a RNZAF photographer. Later a key player in Whites Aviation.
