Prune, caught in the chance light's glare, tries to explain that he was only joking when he told the crew to take the night off, and now the WingCo says that he has to take it to Cologne and back - by himself! Hand-written
Dear William,
This drawing, rough as it is, but my simple best, is dedicated to Anne & the operational aircrew of Bomber Command from both of whom I have drawn much inspiration in an endeavour, at one fell stroke, & in a few square feet, to portray the range of emotions involved. When an old pilot paints his picture, all these aspects come to mind- nostalgia, humour, myth & pathos, drama & tragedy. It has all to be there- somehow. This I have tried to do, but to bring it alive it requires an evidence of living occasion- elementary!, hence the vast expanse of Lanc fuselage I have left open for your chaps to record their names. Those of us still left, for the purpose of which we would all like to discover. Be all that as it may ; perhaps in so doing this ???? cartoon, could in years to come, be held with some little rememence by the country which gave us birth. To reiterate- it would have no significance whatsoever without the living names of your comrades inscribed personally thereon.
Yours sincerely.
