Description
Pestle - Wedgwood. Long with a wooden tapered handle and heavy white porcelain base.
May be a pharmaceutical object as opposed to domestic.
Brief History
Mortars and pestles have been used for thousands of years for grinding substances to a fine or coarse powder, such as spices for food preparation.

The Wedgwood mortar and pestle was introduced by the company in 1779 for pharmaceutical use, and featured a porcelain mortar along with a pestle with a porcelain head and wooden handle. The hardness of the ceramic and its imperviousness to the actions of chemicals such as acids was an advantage.

It is likely that this example dates from the early twentieth century.
