Description
A red vinyl suitcase used by the NAC Airline Hostesses. The suitcase is rectangular with a white corded vinyl trim around the edge and rounded corners. There is a metal zipper and a white plastic handle. The zipper handle locks onto a lock affixed to the suitcase. Printed on both sides of the suitcase in white lettering is: 'NAC / NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL AIRWAY CORPORATION' and the NAC logo. Lined inside with patterned red, blue and white flannelette.
Brief History
Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL), National Airways Corporation (NAC) and later Air New Zealand produced travel bags from the beginnings of their operation to convey branding, commemorate anniversaries, introduce new aircraft, or celebrate inaugural routes flown. This suitcase features the NAC logo, a stylised kūaka (godwit), chosen because of the bird’s association with long distance flying. These suitcases were issued to NAC Hostesses and were featured in the airline’s photo shoots for the 1959 summer and winter uniforms.
