Description
One of three identical taxi meters, brand name NOVEL. Each unit consists of a medium-sized metal box with a plastic front covering a yellow panel. On the top centre the word FARE is printed on a plastic plate which is screwed on. Directly below this is the fare indicated in Dollars and Cents. On the left is a large turning knob which indicates the Tariff as to whether the meter has been HIRED, STOPPED or VACANT. Just below this knob is a toggle switch. A large wind-up key on the front turns in the clockwise direction to wind the mechanism within. At the bottom are 4 windows from left to right: Paid, Total, Trips, Units. Slightly higher up on the right is "Extras". This counter can be reset with the help of a push button just below it. At the base of the meter are 2 bolts and a small cable inlet opening.

One of these Novel taxi meters was purchased by Halda Meter Co of Brandon Road, Islington, London to trial but they decided it was not suitable and too costly. That meter does still exist and is owned by a member of The London Vintage Taxi Association.
