The painting is to commemorate Hampton Grey, a Canadian Corsair pilot, who died late in the Second world war, attacking a Japanese Destroyer, in the homewaters of Japan. He was awarded the Victoria Cross. The right-hand side depicts the RN airfield at Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he trained on Harvards.
