Sears 8 Track Cassette Player.
Part 1: Rectangular black right unit for Sears 8 Track cassette player. The unit is made from metal and plastic and has an extendable handle at the top which retracts into the body of the unit. Behind the handle, there is a slidable panel with "LOCK" embossed on it. At the front of the unit, there is a silver panel along the top which accommodates a silver button, three silver sliders and four green lights. "RIGHT / PROGRAM 1 2 3 4 / 8 TRACK STEREO PLAYER / LOW / BALANCE / HIGH / LEFT / BALANCE / RIGHT / MIN / VOLUME / MAX" is printed. Beneath the silver panel, the body of the unit has raised horizontal bars set into it. "Sears" is printed in the bottom right corner. The unit stands on slightly angled feet. On the proper right side of the unit, there is a slot for cassette tapes with a spring loaded flap covering it. At the back of the unit, there are three ports for attaching plugs. "EXT. SPKR. / R / L" is embossed. "JAPAN" is embossed in the lower right corner.
Part 2: Rectangular black left unit for Sears 8 Track cassette player. The unit is made from metal and plastic. Along the back edge, there is a recess into which the lock from the right side fits to connect the two pieces together. At the front of the unit, there is a silver panel along the top with "LEFT / Sears / SOLID STATE" printed in black. Beneath the silver panel, the body of the unit has raised horizontal bars set into it. "8 Track Stereo Player" is printed in the bottom right corner. The unit stands on slightly angled feet. At the back of the unit, there is a recess on the left with a mount in it around which a black five-pinned cable used to connect the two parts of the object has been wound. Below the cable, there is a port and two white stickers with "AC 120V" and "D 3403" printed on them. In the middle of the back, there is a black plate with "MODEL NO. 250.21280200 / FOR PARTS AND SERVICE, ALWAYS GIVE / THE ABOVE MODEL NUMBER. / AC 120 VOLTS 60Hz 28 WATTS / EXT DC 12 VOLTS / SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO., U.S.A / MADE IN JAPAN" Next to this, there is a white sticker with "Tape Rec. APPL. / U / L / LISTED 791J" printed. "CAUTION: TO PREVENT ELECTRICAL SHOCK, / DO NOT REMOVE BACK COVER. NO USER / SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER / SERVICING TO QUALIFIED SERVICE / PERSONNEL." is embossed. To the right, there is a large cavity to fit three large batteries. Inside, ""D" CELL / 15V / "D" CELL / 15V / "D" CELL / 15V / "D" CELL / 15V / "D" CELL / 15V / "D" CELL / 15V / "D" CELL / 15V / "D" CELL / 15V" is embossed. There is a white paper label with "[?] Batteries / [?] STOCK NO. 57-6445 / [?] NO. 57-64[?]" printed on it. Along the bottom edge of the back, there are two protruding silver pins to lock the sides together.
Part 3: Black plastic panel with a pinch catch at top and "OPEN" embossed. At the back of the panel, there is a brown textile.

Brief History
8-track cassette tapes are a type of magnetic tape audio recording technology. Unlike standard tape cassettes which are a compact form of reel-to-reel technology, the 8-track cassette consists of one continuous loop of tape. The tape is wound around a central spool exiting from the centre and winding on from the outside. This way the cassette can be played continuously without the need to flip or rewind the cassette. An 8-track cassette tape has eight parallel tracks, four stereo pairs, that can be switched between on the player.
This 8-track stereo player was made in Japan and distributed by the Sears department store in the United States of America. It is a portable design with a carry handle. The two speakers can either be used side by side for stereo performance or clipped together for compact portable use. A program button allows easy switching between the four stereo tracks. The unit can be powered via a mains power cable, 8 x 1.5V size D batteries, or via a car cigarette lighter adaptor.
