Brief History
The konaki is a sledge-styled, unsprung trailer, designed for New Zealand conditions and used by farmers and settlers around the late 1800s and early 1900s. The trailer has sledge runners at the front and wheels at the back, and was used to get through deep mud where there were non-existent or barely formed tracks. This type of vehicle would have been pulled by bullocks or horses.
The word 'konaki' derives from kooneke, the Maaori word for 'sledge'.
