Brief History
During an experiment with a magnetron, American engineer Percy Spencer discovered it was emitting heat-generating microwaves. From this chance discovery, he developed and patented the microwave oven. The first commercial microwave oven became available in 1947, with the first domestic version launched in 1955. It was not until later in the 1960s however that microwaves began to become popular in America.
Microwave ovens appeared in New Zealand kitchens in the 1970s. This 2007 Whirlpool Crisp & Grill model combines a microwave oven with grill functionality, with a grill rack that can be introduced to cook food differently from in a standard microwave.
