Brief History
Automatic dishwashers were invented in the United States in 1886 by Josephine Cochrane. The rotating sprayer and rack system which are still found in dishwashers today were introduced in the 1920s. In 1940 William Howard Livens invented a front loading dishwasher with a drying element, and the first automated model was released by Miele in 1960.
‘Excitement arrives with PYE’ is what the advertising said about the PYE Dishmaid. The automated dishwasher began to become more common in domestic settings from the 1970s. The dishwasher automatically filled with water via plumbed-in hoses, washing, rinsing, and drying dishes.
Pye Ltd was an electronics company founded by William Pye in Cambridge, UK in 1896 as a manufacturer of scientific instruments. The company later diversified into the radio, television and telecommunications fields, and also manufactured home appliances. It merged with EKCO in 1960 and was later taken over by Philips Electronics.
