Description
-1 Solid brass plaque with the map of the United Kingdom. A small portion of North-Western part of Europe can also be seen. The key cities in the U.K. are marked with black dots and connected to each other with red lines. On the top right hand corner is a shield below which are the words: The Olley Challenge Trophy A.C. Williams 1938-39 The College of Aeronautical Engineering -2 Dark blue case which opens up down the centre and is locked by a metal clasp. There is a gold decoration on the border. On both the inner halves can be seen the name of the maker. The inner side is padded and lined with silk.
Brief History
The highly regarded Olley Challenge Trophy is awarded annually to graduates of the College of Aeronautical Engineering, England. Allen Craig Williams was the recipient in 1938. After attending a three-year course at the College, Williams went on to a successful career as an aircraft engineer with Eastern Imperial Airways, British Airways, which merged to form the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). Later in his career, Williams had roles with Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL) which later became Air New Zealand.
