Description
A wooden trophy in the shape of a shield - "Gaunt St. Trammie's Shield" - printed on top in light blue with a thin blue line underneath.
In the centre of the wooden shield is another small metal shield with the words: "New Hebrides" "Pallikulo" "Yacht Club".
Below this shield is a metal banner with the words: "Winner Rakihura A.H. Chalmers". Below that is printed N.Z. in light blue. A pair of silver-coloured fern leaves adorn the lower half of the wooden shield. There are a pair of closed hooks screwed in at the back with a cotton thread tied to the hooks enabling the shield to be hung up on a wall.
Brief History
In 1943, the Gaunt Street Tramways workshop sent this shield over to one of their members stationed with the RNZAF at Santos in the New Hebrides. The Airforce personnel had set up an active sailing club in Pallikulo Bay with small 10ft yachts built from whatever they could find around the station workshop. Races were held each Sunday, and for this new shield the best out of three races was to be the winner. The first 2 races were won by S. Rakihuna, and the shield was presented to Skipper A. H. Chalmers who was declared the winner.
