Description
'Pilot' tabletop platen printing press made of steel and cast iron fixed on a wooden base. There are 2 inking rollers 240 x 30 mm operated by large lever which pushes the rollers up and over flat disc. The lever also moves rectangular front press plate up. Wooden platform at front of machine. Metal painted grey.
Brief History
The Pilot press was manufactured by Chandler & Price from around 1892 until the 1970s. It was built from a pattern developed by the Cleveland Type Foundry after Chandler & Price acquired the manufacturing rights. Tabletop hand-operated platen presses were designed to be relatively portable, and easy to operate and maintain. For these reasons they have been used extensively in schools and small businesses. A unique feature of the Pilot is that the lever can be fitted to either side of the press to provide ease of use by both left and right handed operators.
