Description
Grey bag of PVC coated cotton. It is slightly trapezoidal in shape with the bottom slightly longer than the top. There is white piping around the edges of the larger sides which also feature identical decoration.
"TEAL" is in large white letters (150 x 72 mm) and "NEW ZEALAND's INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE" is in blue underneath (226 x 10 mm). The TEAL logo is gold (a stylised flying fish or Maroro) between TEAL and the slogan on the right.
A metal zipper runs across the top and part way down the sides. Just below where the zipper ends, a shoulder strap is attached with a round metal clasp. The strap is 18 mm wide and has a clasp that allows it to be adjusted. There are 5 round metal legs attached to the base, each is only about 8 mm long.
The interior is mostly unlined except for a rectangular support sewn into the base and 2 rectangular cardboard supports just inside the top. Each is 75 mm wide and covered with a PVC treated cotton flap. Also, just outside is a tag which says "A Deco Plastics product, Duffy Electronics Pty. Ltd., Sydney, NSW, P.V.C. coated cotton".
Brief History
Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL), National Airways Corporation (NAC) and later Air New Zealand produced travel bags from the beginnings of their operation to convey branding, commemorate anniversaries, introduce new aircraft, or celebrate inaugural routes flown. This bag features the TEAL Maroro or flying fish, designed by William ‘Bill’ Haythornthwaite and George Moore, to associate the airline with the Pacific Ocean. It also features the tagline ‘New Zealand’s International Airline,’ as opposed to NAC who serviced domestic routes. The Maroro design was in place from 1946 and later used by Air New Zealand in branding and on aircraft until around 1982.
