Description
Napier tram bogie (fleet number unknown) 3' 6" gauge. Brush 21E without motor. Colour: painted black with rust brown wheels.
Brief History
This bogie was originally from a Napier tram, thought to be one of the first ordered from Brush Electrical Engineering Company Limited. Napier's tramway operated between circa 1913-1931, but was permanently closed when the earthquake on the 3rd of February, 1931 flattened much of the city and surrounding Hawke's Bay Region. For five years, the trams stood unused in their trambarn until the decision was taken to remove the entire tramway system. The trams were stripped and sold and this bogie was converted in 1959 for use as a railway shunter by the Tawa Timber Company (later, Robert Holt and Sons Limited) in Waitane. The bogie was donated to MOTAT by Carter Holt Harvey in 1981.
