Brief History
Miles Magister ZK-AYW (painted as L8353)

The Magister was initially designed to meet the demands of the Royal Air Force for a low-wing monoplane trainer. They were operated by the RAF and as a trainer for the Fleet Air Arm, which operated 17 of the aircraft during World War Two. Many pilots, including those of the Fleet Air Arm, would have taken their initial training in these aircraft.

Just under 1300 Magisters were built during the War, with an additional 100 later manufactured in Turkey.

MOTAT’s Magister is one of nine believed to have been brought to New Zealand, where they were used predominantly by Aero clubs. This aircraft was originally in service with the RAF, where it had over 3500 hours of flying. In 1953 it was shipped to New Zealand for its new owner, the Waitomo Aero Club and received the new registration of ZK-AYW.

It has been painted in the RAF trainer colours it would have worn when in service for the RAF at Woodley in 1940.
