Description
Re-Po sign, a round metal disc enamelled. The wording on the sign is as follows: "USE RE-PO THE EASY AUTO POLISH". The general background of the sign is white with RE-PO in bold, black letters. The word "USE" is printed in black letters over a green symbolic band. "The EASY AUTO POLISH" is printed in white letters on a red, oval shape located at the bottom section of the disc. After the painting and artwork on the disc has been completed, the whole disc has been enamelled to protect and preserve the sign. There are holes with eyelets located around the edge of the disc at the positions of 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock. These are the screw holes for fixing the sign in the appropriate advertising position for marketing RE-PO products.
Brief History
This type of advertising sign was placed in mechanics garages by the representatives of Motor Traders Limited. The signs were on loan to promote RE-PO products, and the garage was required to display the sign. Each quarter, the RE-PO representatives were responsible for a stocktake of products and also to ensure the RE-PO sign was being displayed. If it was not on display, the sign was recovered by RE-PO. Each sign had a number and this particular sign was allocated to Pady Ryan's Garage in Queens Road, Panmure.
RE-PO products were a range of vehicle car-care products produced by Australian company Hardie Trading and imported into New Zealand by Motor Traders Limited from 1936. After the Second World War, manufacturing was relocated to New Zealand by a division of Hardie Trading, and remained producing waxes and polishes up until 1981 when the company was sold to Polycell Products Limited.
