Description
The Segrave Trophy which was awarded to Jean Batten in 1936. The inscription bears: "IMAGINATION. COURAGE. INITIATIVE. / THE / SEGRAVE TROPHY / FOUNDED 1931 / AWARDED TO / MISS JEAN BATTEN 1936". Trophy is made of bronze and copper and depicts standing figure holding trident. Below this is a profile of Sir Henry Segrave which is set on top of wings. The trophy is rectangular in shape and encased in a red leather case with gold decorative trim and 2 gold clasps. Interior of white satin and purple velvet. The Segrave Trophy was presented to Jean Batten for her flying achievements.
Brief History
The Segrave Trophy, named in honour of Sir Henry Segrave, has been awarded since 1930 to British subjects who accomplishes the outstanding demonstrations of the possibilities of transport by land, sea, air, or water. The trophy was awarded to Jean Batten in 1936 for her flying achievements.
The inscription reads: 'Imagination - Courage - Initiative / The Segrave Trophy founded 1931. / Awarded to Miss Jean Batten, 1936' and depicts standing figure holding trident based on the statue 'England My Mother'. Below this is a profile of Sir Henry Segrave which is set on top of wings.
