Description
A 50 foot cast iron rail turntable which was used at the Auckland rail yard at Britomart No.1 platform.
Brief History
This 50 foot turntable is believed to have been imported from the United States of America around 1878 to be the first turntable installed in Auckland for turning tender engines. Prior to that, smaller 20 foot turntables were used. From 1929 it was installed in the No. 1 Car Yard to turn North Island Main Trunk guard vans attached to the rear of expresses. It was then used to turn locomotives when the facilities in Auckland were removed before coming to MOTAT.
