Red with black detail. A very 'square' shape running back to full width, fully enclosed control compartment which has a curving roof. The front has a silver painted grille behind which is an in-line 8-cylinder Gardner engine. A ladder into each side of the cabin: powerful lights at each end, also running boards. The locomotive is equipped with Westinghouse train brake equipment and, therefore, can be used from time to time on passenger carrying services. Dsa 280 is a conventional plate-framed type of six-coupled 0-6-0 wheel arrangement and weighs 30 tonnes in working order.
Power is furnished by a Gardner 8L3 compression-ignition diesel engine developing a maximum of 204 bhp at 1200 rpm. The drive is through a Vulcan Sinclair hydraulic coupling embodied in the engine flywheel, thence through a Wilson-Drewry epicyclic gearbox and a jackshift mounted reverse and reduction gear unit which renders all speeds available in either direction.
Brief History
Dsa 223 is a 30 tonne, Diesel-Mechanical locomotive, powered by a 204 HP (150 kW) Gardner 8L3 diesel engine designed for shunting duties. It was one of a batch of 27 built by The Vulcan Foundry Limited, Newton-Le-Willows, Lancashire in 1953 for The Drewry Car Company Limited, City Wall House, London E.C.2. The Drewry A-1 model was first introduced in 1949 and classified as "Ds". This model was superseded by the heavier A-2, of which 20 were built from 1953 onwards and classified Dsa. These locomotives had a new style cab with sloping sides, after the fashion of contemporary diesel locomotives and were fitted with Westinghouse brakes. This class were designed to tow 1000 tonnes on level track at walking pace. Dsa 223 entered service in March 1954 for shunting duties and replaced steam traction on the shunt at Taumarunui where it was used to remake trains for the Raurimu Spiral. It worked between Raurimu and the National Park for most of it's service. The locomotive was given a "C" special overhaul at East Town in 1976 and then worked at Rotorua until May 1980 when it became Car and Wagon shunter at Te Rapa. It was then transferred to Otahuhu and used as a workshop shunter. It was later given the TMS (Traffic Monitoring System) number 280. The Dsa class was then replaced by New Zealand Railways with more powerful diesel electric shunting locomotives. It came into the MOTAT Collection in 1985 and is currently operated by the Western Springs Railway.
