Brief History
The Colson Company’s tricycle is linked to Winslow Fay, a cart maker, who established the company Fay Manufacturing in 1885. Fay is credited with improving the design of tricycles and manufacturing tricycles for disabled peoples. A 1930 Colson Company brochure shows a later model of this tricycle advertised at girls between the ages of 3 to 9 as a safe riding option. These tricycles are said to be distinctively recognisable because of the seat’s attachment to the chassis by a central support post, which can be seen in the MOTAT example. Fay Manufacturing was later purchased by Fred Colson in 1917 and continued to manufacture tricycles. Colson added hospital wheeled equipment and industrial material handling equipment to the product line.
