Relay unit - RD 8498. Consists of two rectangular brackets , blue grey colour. In one side sits the relay, in the other is a mercury switch connected to bayonet light fitting.

This is a "Float Level" switch. the mercury would close or open the circuit when the angle of the whole thing is moved over.
