Brief History
Stephenson’s Rocket was an early steam locomotive, designed by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) in 1829. It ran on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Brampton railway in Cumberland in the 1830s.
Stephenson’s Rocket, while not the first steam locomotive, represented a substantial technical advance over previous designs, bringing together in one machine such developments as the multi-tube boiler and the blast-pipe, and it was the most advanced locomotive of its day.
A 00 gauge model of the Rocket was first released by Triang Hornby in 1963. Early versions were fitted with a smoke generator, but this feature was discontinued from 1966. Production ceased in 1969 by which time 12,500 locomotives had been sold in the U.K. and a further 22,500 overseas.
It was re-introduced to the Hornby range between 1982 and 1983, and sold in Hornby Railways packaging. Included with this Hornby Hobbies Limited Edition are 3 coaches - 'Times', 'Experience' and 'Despatch'. These represent 3 of the coaches that the Rocket pulled on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in the 1830s.
