Description
Lego model of "Milne & Choyce Ltd." building, aka Milne and Choyce. This is a tall heavy structure, 7 stories high, cream in colour and built entirely from Lego pieces. The base is a long green piece of wood on which the whole structure sits. This model is a replica of the famous department store which was on Queen Street in Auckland until it was demolished in 1984.
Brief History
Milne & Choyce Limited was one of Auckland's leading retailers for over 100 years. This Lego model is a replica of the department store which stood on Queen Street in Auckland until it was demolished in 1984.
The store’s beginning can be traced to 1867, when Mary Jane Milne and Charlotte Milne opened a milliner’s and draper’s store after immigrating to Auckland from Ireland. In 1874 Charlotte married Henry Choyce and the firm became Milne & Choyce, with Mary Jane as a business partner. In 1909 they moved to the Queen Street premises depicted in this model.
The store sold fashionable clothing and provided a dressmaking service. In later years the store also contained a barber and hairdresser. Milne & Choyce was eventually bought by the Fletcher group of companies and closed in 1973.
The name 'LEGO' is an abbreviation of two Danish words: 'leg' and 'godt' meaning 'play well'. The company was established in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen and the LEGO brick began to be produced in 1958.
