Description
Silver coloured metal plaque from ZK-AYH, a Bristol Freighter operated by Straits Air Freight Express. This plaque is from the aircraft wing which broke off when the plane crashed near Timaru on 21 November 1957.

Plaque inscribed: "ZK-AYN. SERIAL NO.12828 / THIS AEROPLANE IS THE / PROPERTY OF / AIRWORK LTD. / 15 CHESTERFIELD ST. / LONDON. W.1. / WITH WHOM ARE ASSOCIATED / STRAITS AIR FREIGHT / EXPRESS LTD. / P/O BOX 461. WELLINGTON / NEW ZEALAND."
Brief History
This small plaque came from a Bristol Freighter ZK-AYH which was operated by Straits Air Freight Express (SAFE). This company, established in 1950, was a cargo airline which connected with the New Zealand railway system.
A number of Bristol Freighters were operated by SAFE and ZK-AYH was one of two purchased during the 1950s for air freight operations.
During a flight between Paraparaumu Airport and Timaru Airport ZK-AYH sustained serious structural failure. ZK-AYH crashed, with debris spread over several kilometres. Tragically none of the four occupants survived.
This plaque is believed to have been affixed to a wing of ZK-AYH.
