Description
Land Rover Series II, ex: Paeroa, New Zealand Fire Service. Small red converted ute with a tow bar. NZ Fire Service Badges on doors with Paeroa written under, hoses mounted to the front, two makers plates on back, red leather bench seat, metal ladder on top.
Brief History
During the 1950s New Zealand Fire Brigades operated imported Land Rovers fitted with rear mounted pumps. These were reasonably common in rural areas and were very versatile. They were able to carry people and equipment to areas difficult to access in a regular fire engine. Both short wheelbase and long wheelbase Land Rovers were used - this example has a long wheelbase.
Standard features of the Land Rover fire engine included 180 litre (40 gallon) first aid water tank, 36.5 metres (120 feet) of rubber hose coiled on a drum, hose lockers and pump control panel.
This example served at Paeroa and at Hahei before coming to Motat.
