Brief History
This is a British Dennis fire appliance chassis fitted with a Metz Aerial Group (Germany) turntable-mounted telescopic ladder (TTL) of 38-metres. It is one of only six manufactured worldwide in this configuration, with the 30-metre version being more common. This would give it an extended reach of about 10 storeys compared to the more typical reach of 8.5 storeys for its 30-metre counterpart.

Turntable ladders give more access to buildings because they are able to be rotated and the angle varied. This ladder is raised by chains attached to the turntable, powered by the vehicle’s engine. It was used to rescue people from a building or for pumping a high volume of water onto a fire from a height.

Among the many fires it attended, this Dennis Metz attended the Farmers Trading Company Bulk Store (Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland) fire of 1963. This major fire needed 20 pumps to get it under control and led to the hospitalisation of over 30 firefighters due to smoke inhalation from burning cork.

It was in service at Auckland Central Fire Station between 1957 and 1971, before going to Parnell when replaced by the International Snorkel. It was transferred to Ōtāhuhu in 1976 and then Ōtara in in 1977 and finally decommissioned in June 1981. It was transferred from Ferrymead to MOTAT in 1994.
