This motorcycle was used for patrol duties by the New Zealand Ministry of Transport Traffic Safety Service until motorbikes were phased out of use in 1991. The Traffic Safety Service arm of the Ministry of Transport used to carry out traffic and vehicle patrolling duties on our roads until the Service merged with the New Zealand Police in 1992.

The bike was designed and made by BMW for 'official use', that is for use by organizations such as the Police, all over the world. It has a 4-stroke, 798 cc flat, twin-cylinder engine with a power output of 50 brake horsepower at 6500 rpm.

BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) was founded in Munich (Germany) in 1917 when two aircraft manufacturing firms merged. They began to make engines for other types of bikes in 1921. Later, in 1923, they released the first all-BMW motorcycle.
