Brief History
The Jawa is a Czechoslovakian manufactured motorcycle. Jawa Motors was formed by Frantisek Janecek, and their first motorcycle was their own version of the German ‘Wanderer’ design. The name Jawa is made up of the first two letters of Janecek and Wanderer.
During the 1930s Jawa Motors started producing racing motorcycles, and their machines were powerful and innovative compared to their competitors. They produced their first 175cc motorcycle in 1932. It was a simple motorcycle which was cheap to produce. Most of their later motorcycles had larger engines, and they became popular all over the world, many of them being successful in racing events. New Zealander motorcycle racer Ivan Mauger was the official Jawa factory rider from 1969 to 1982.
In 1948 Jawa merged with CZ motorcycles, another Czech company which made street motorcycles as well as racing bikes. Jawa motorcycles have a cult following in India where they are still made today, and sold under the brand name Yezdi.
